Tips for keeping house and home cool in hot weather!

Posted by on 7/19/2013 to Ideas & Inspiration
In the UK, we sometimes find it difficult to deal with very hot temperatures, so we thought we'd share a few tips to help keep your house and home cool in a heatwave.
tips for keeping your house cool in hot weather by
  1. Keep windows closed during the day, particularly if they face the sun. Keep blinds down and curtains closed to keep the heat out. Blackout blinds and curtain linings are very effective.
You can open all the windows in the house very early in the morning when it's cool to let air circulate and in the evening when the temperature has dropped. But in between keep them closed and covered.

  2. If you really want to open windows during the day then make sure that there is a draught of air circulating through by opening opposite windows at the front and back. You can still keep blinds and curtains closed to deflect direct sunlight.

  3. If you have sash windows then open the top and bottom in equal amounts to keep air circulating. Do the same for any windows that have a double opening.

  4. Make sure that your house is well insulated as insulation is good at keeping heat out as well as in.

  5. Remember to completely switch off all the electrical appliances that you don't need as these generate more heat than you might expect.

  6. Electric fans can provide much needed relief, but make sure that you are using them to their best advantage. Since heat rises the coolest air in the house will be at floor level, so put the fan on the floor and point it upwards. Position it so that it points outwards towards the opposite wall, making sure that there is no obstruction by large pieces of furniture. This will ensure that the cooler air bounces off the wall and back into the room, mixing with the warm air to help cool the temperature.
Get cooler more quickly by placing a bowl of icy water in front of the fan, so that the air blows across it.

  7. Since heat rises, open the loft hatch so that the hot air that has risen to the top floor of the house can rise even further into the attic.

  8. Install a ceiling fan in the bedroom to help make sleeping easier and keep cool air circulating.

Summer 2013 interior colours and trends

Posted by on 6/21/2013 to Ideas & Inspiration
Today is officially the first day of Summer! Will it be the lovely warm summer that we all crave? Unfortunately, we can't offer you any insight into the likely weather trends for the next couple of months! But we can help you with some ideas to bring a splash of colour to your home and daily life based on interior trends for summer 2013.

We look at some of the key interior and colour trends highlighted by Elle, Kelly Hoppen, NCS and Global Colour Research and suggest a few of our favourite products.

Gorgeous Greens

Although Emerald Green is Pantone's Colour of 2013, all shades of green are a go this year! Particularly luscious lime green, which makes us feel all summery.

Beautiful Beiges, Natural Neutrals & Lace

Beige often gets a bad name as being boring, but it doesn't have to be. There are so many super neutral shades that will create both timeless and contemporary looks with the right injection of accent colour and warmth. Lace is also something to consider this year.
